Family in India

In February 2008 I went back to Ooty with my wife and two ladies who are Wapshare family and who met up with me through family research.
We set out from Mysore and drove to the foot of the Nilgiris where we were met in Gudalore by Richard who is the manager of the Compton estate which was the home of Bea Wapshare until she died.
We went to the graveyard at the Helen estate where the graves of Henry Wapshare and his son James are in very good condition. Nearby at the Burnside estate the grave of Edward Wapshare has been recently painted. Richard explained how he had crept out of the estate with Bea one night to fetch the police when the staff were rioting after the death of Edward.
Then we rejoined the road to Naduvattam and stopped to admire the magnificent view at Chinese Hills which has recently changed hands. Richard said that he had buried Bob on the site but we were unable to gain access to see whether the grave was marked.
Then we drove on to Compton where the staff are still in place and the gardens are beautifully kept up. Bea is buried in a well kept grave next to Queenie and we had tea on the lawn.
After spending the night at the Savoy in Ooty, we found the graves of Nellie Hunt and her daughter Dorothy at St Thomas' church and at St Stephens was photographed the plaque to William Henry and found his grave behind the church. Sadly the next grave had collapsed onto William's and we hope that Richard will clear it away.
We left by train to enjoy the scenery.

Here's something you might be interested in. My family lived in Bea Wapshare's Burnside Estate in the 1980s. A relative of my father bought the estate from her and my father managed it for him. Some of my earliest memories are of Burnside Estate. We even have pictures of the estate and Bea. We continued to keep in touch with her till her death. I remember her as someone who loved dogs. She was always rescuing some stray pup or the other. My parents I'm sure have more stories.

Hi everybody, this is Bea Wapshare's grandaughter. For those of you who knew my beloved grandmother and have been fortunate to visit her wonderful home and estate, I thought you may be interested to know that our now home, in the beautiful Nilgiris has been taken over by imposters since the early hours of 30th October 2012. My mother and I are currently in the UK due to my mum requiring an operation. The property was broken entry to at approximately 2am on the 30th Oct and the criminals have now been in possession of our bungalow, possessions and estate for 3 weeeks. The criminals are Joseph Easwaran and his son Prince and families. They have falsely been claiming to be Wapshares' for many years and have managed to gain many many false documents by bribery and corruption. They were actually workers for the late Bob Wapshare. Our manager Richard Burrows has had to flee his home on the estate and all of our employees are unable to work. The Indian authorities have of course been informed but it would seem some of these have also been heavily bribed. This is obviously an extremely stressful time for both my mother and I so if anybody can offer any assistance we would be most grateful. We are hoping that the Indian police will evict the imposters as soon as possible.

Chester if you have read this information please e mail me. We have had to change our land line here in the UK due to nuisance calls from the imposters.

My grandmother worked incredibly hard for 50 years to gain her beautiful home and estate. We have been managing the estate since her demise in 1999.

Thank you for the kind comments regarding our late mother and grandmother.

Alex and Shirley

I am truly and dreadfully shocked and sorry to hear this diabolical news; that these criminals have the audacity to take something which is not theirs and the manner in which they have broken into someone else’s property.
I hope you get this sorted soon, as it must be extremely stressful and heart-breaking for you. I know how much you loved being part of the Nilgiris community and how highly your staff thought of you. The fact that your grandmothers grave is on the property must add to the heartache and devastation, plus all her belongings and memories of her.
My best wishes are with you at this terrible time.

Hello, my name is Valerie Hill and I am the great grand daughter of Mary Wilby who married Richard Walton Wapshare on 22nd November 1909 at Kolar Gold Fields. They had a daughter my grandmother Florence Addaline Wapshare. I have a copy of their original marriage certificate, stating William Wapshare as the father of Richard Walton Wapshare and Joseph Wilby as the father of Mary Wilby. My mother was Verna Mary Wilby the daughter of Florence. I have only recently been looking into my family tree and have several documents which have only recently come to light. I would be interested to hear from anyone with any connection to Mary Wilby.

Thank you

Of all her brothers only Terrance had sons. so is Terrance walton your father / grandfather?

Hi Valerie,

Mary Wilby is my maternal great grand mother. Mary's daughter Molly Walton was my grandmother. Both Mary and Richard Walton spent their last days with Molly in my hometown and are buried there.
My mother remembers Mary's death date as 17-Sep-1972. Of all her siblings, my mother was the closest to her grandmother, Mary Wilby.

let me know if you are looking for any specific info.

Regards,
Dominic

Hello Dominic, I came across this post after trying to do a search on Clancys in my family on my dad's side. His mother was born a Clancy (her name was Daphne Ann), and her mother was Mary. My dad recalls an uncle Mervyn, as being one of several of my grandma's older brothers. Is it possible your Mervyn is the same as the one on my tree??? Daphne was born in 1926 and possibly Bangalore, but we never exactly knew any details about her life.

Dominic said...

Hi Natasha,

My maternal grandfather's name was Mervyn John Clancy and yes he had a sister named Daphne that my mother remembers. He married Molly Teresa Walton and burger were in Bangalore until my mom was 3 years old, they left Bangalore after my grandmother lost two kids in a span of six months. So you've got it right. In fact my mom is still in touch with her paternal cousin Iris from Bangalore/Mysore

Natasha Polak said...

Wow Dominic! Does the year fit for when my grandma was born with your grandfather's sister Daphne? All we knew was that she was born in northern India and was the youngest in her family. She did have twin girls out of wedlock but one was stillborn and the other grew up in a convent. My grandma went on to marry John Kohlhoff and moved to Madras (Chennault). My dad (Ken) remembers only vague memories of any of the people in grandma's family. Did Mervyn have a brother Valentine? Or a cousin Pam? Or a daughter Heather? Those were all the names he could think of. He said in the 1960's he visited Mervyn with one of his sisters on holiday in Coimbatore area. Does any of that match with your family???

Natasha Polak said...

Oops sorry about my auto-correct typo! That should have said Madras or Chennai - NOT whatever rubbish autocorrect tried to suggest!!

Dominic said...

Both were in Bangalore**** please excuse the typo

Natasha Polak said...

Well you are in good company with my typos - no problem! Hahah. Also, Bangalore holds a lot of memories for my dad too with some of the family. Can't wait to hear from you regarding all my questions so I can share with my dad!!!

Dominic said...

My mom will have more details. Will speak to her in the morning. It's 12:40 AM now. Feel free to drop me an email if you need any info

Thanks!!

Dominic said...

Hi Natasha,

Spoke to my mom and this is what she said:
1. Mervyn had two elder brothers named Herbert and Clifford (those are your grandma's brothers too)
2. Your father has a cousin Pamela (Pam), that's my aunt (Mervyn's youngest daughter - about the same age as your dad) and my mom's sister
3. The visit in the sixties may be misplaced coz your grand mom visited Mervyn with Karen and Loretta (your father's sisters)
4. Does your father have two brothers named Philip and Fritz? And another sister Pernel (in addition to the two named above)?

Heather is my mother's cousin but on the Walton side not on the Clancy side. However, possibly maybe my mom doesn't know this part of the family on the Clancy side.

Are you based in Bangalore or Chennai?

Regards
Dominic

Natasha Polak said...

I will email you but other than a couple of details you had a little off, we are most definitely related!! I am so excited!!!

Natasha said...

What were Mervyn's parents names? Grandparents, etc? How far back do you have Clancy history traced? Were they born in Ireland or the U.K.? Grandma Daphne never gave us info on any of this, although my dad remembers Granny Mary whom he knew to be her mom. Is that right? We also have a reason to question if Daphne's dad was different than Mervyn's. She mentioned to me years ago how she was the only daughter to her parents, but had older brothers, so I never was fully sure. I would love to be able to have more full names, dates, and locations of anything you have so I can research more documents that might be accessible online! Thanks!

Thank you for this wonderful blog and fascinating (and painstaking history) of the Wapshare family. I live in Bangalore and am writing up a book on the history of the Bangalore cantonment and the United Service Club. I came across the blog while researching General Sir Richard Wapshare who was President of the Bangalore Club, 1913-1915 and there are some marvellous entries in the minutes of him ordering crockery and linen from England for the Club as well making significant administrative changes. I have been privileged to write this book and know so much more about Bangalore. We go to print in three weeks...and it would mean a lot to us if anyone had a picture of Sir Richard we could use in the book next to his introduction. Is there family in Bangalore still? Would love to meet you!!!!

By Minutes, I mean the Minutes of the General Committee Meetings that he presided over.:-)

I guess my post is too late, but I've been in Ooty for 4 days now, mostly as a tourist with family. Is there anything anyone wants me to lookup?
I'm leaving tomorrow for Coimbatore airport at 10 am

Hello Chester Wapshare

I do coffee table books on plantation history, in the new book I have included Outcherloney and Wapshares with some research, hope it will be correct. I am still trying to find James Outcherloneys wife and his children, I have found that his daughter Mary Emily Outcherloney was the wife of Henry Charles Frederick Wapshare, thus starting the connection between the two families.

My email is staygeo@gmail.com thanks for writing this blog. I am also visiting Ovalley soon.

Things have gone in an unfortunate direction for us recently but I am making an attempt to catch up on our Indian family. Sadly the website wapshare.co.uk has been down for a year and I am working on that as well.
Thanks for all of your comments, nice to know that folks have an interest.
